CERIC Research Partnership:  The Development and Publication of a Canadian Career Counselling Text
Phase 1 (b) – Summary

For the last four months, we have focused on collecting information from career educators, researchers and practitioners, from around the country, regarding their vision for a Canadian Career Development Textbook.  We have surveyed this group twice in order to get clear direction on the content and structure of the book.  Seventy-one of our career development colleagues responded to our first “Needs Assessment Survey”, giving us excellent insight into the topics and features they wanted to see included in the text.  From this feedback, a tentative outline for the textbook was created and our colleagues were asked once again for their reactions and suggestions.  The second survey generated 55 responses, 75% of which were satisfied with the outline proposed.  Many of those expressed their app...

Executive Summary from CERIC Grant – February 2009

The proposed project will promote the development, analysis, and assessment of current counselling and career development theories and practices in Canada by developing a Canadian-authored text that includes a critical analysis of current theories and Canadian research and an evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions. The publication will foster a professional identity in the field of career counselling and development by providing students with Canadian specific knowledge of theory, by increasing awareness of successful Canadian career programs, and by presenting material that includes the voices of Canadian practitioners, researchers, and theorists.

The idea for the current project emerged from the Advancement of Career Counsellor Education in Canada Think Tank, Montreal, October 21 – 22, 2006. The think tank consisted of counsellor educators across Canada who taught career coun...

Promoting Professional Identity: Development of a Canadian Career Counselling Text

Presenters: Dr. Blythe Shepard, Dr. Priya S. Mani, and Allison Roest

Presentation at the CANNEXUS 2010 Conference

Conference Abstract:

A discrepancy between the ever-increasing emergence of Canadian innovative programs and content in career related programs across Canada and their almost complete lack of representation within current career counselling textbooks used at the undergraduate level is apparent. Post secondary instructors within Canadian institutions are in need of material that is contextually based that will help them to teach more effectively. The main objective of this presentation is to share the analysis of a needs assessment survey that has been provided to career practitioners, academics, and various career development organizations and identify aspects considered pertinent that reflect the changing Can...

Dr. Blythe Shepard, Associate Professor in Counselling Psychology University of Lethbridge.

Faculty: Education
Division: Counselling Psychology
Research Areas of Interest: Career Development

I have extensive elementary teaching experience and research in rural settings. I am particularly interested in the examination of the life-career patterns of rural youth and women. Examples of my research include SSHRC funded doctoral work focusing on the life-career planning of rural young women and a SSHRC grant that examined the life-career process of rural youth in three communities. An ethnographic-narrative approach was used that involved three mapping activities: community supports and barriers, self-defining life events, and participants’ hopes and fears for the future. I also a partner with several community agencies including Whitecrow Village Camp for families who have children with FASD, Victoria FASD Community Cir...
